Huang Hefeng, Chairman of International Peace Maternity & Child Health Hospital of China Welfare Institute, was elected as an academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences
On November 28th, Chinese Academy of Sciences announced the list of new academician members in 2017; Huang Hefeng, Chairman and Deputy Secretary of Party Committee of International Peace Maternity & Child Health Hospital of China Welfare Institute, was elected as an academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Huang Hefeng engaged in reproductive medicine and genetic disease prevention and control clinical and basic researches for many years. Focusing on infertility, genetic diseases and key science and technology problems in the assisted reproductive technology, Huang Hefeng combined the basic researches with clinical problems closely and applied the research results into clinical areas to improve the safety of test-tube babies and got a series of innovative research results with international influences.

Engaging in medical treatment for more than 30 years, Huang Hefeng has witnessed the rapid development of modern medicine and the update of public awareness of maternal and child health field. "For decades, I worked from the simple bedside to the cellular and molecular biology laboratory. Even though the road is long and rugged, I still wanted to make achievements for more people’s desire of new lives." said Huang Hefeng.

In recent years, the infertility rate is still rising; and the newborn birth defect rate is also high: the incidence rates of abortion, premature delivery, asthma, ADHD, autism, metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular disease and various tumors are in gradually rising trend. At the same time, there are increasing evidences showing that all these diseases are related to the intrauterine environment risk factors in the parent body during the pregnancy at the early life stage; therefore, these diseases are called "embryonic source diseases."
"There is a very limited understanding of embryonic source diseases. The researches mainly focus on epidemiological investigations; and there is still a lot to be explored in the aspects such as pathogenesis." As the founder of international hypothesis "gamete/ embryonic source disease", Huang Hefeng keenly found: with the large-scale development of assisted reproductive technology (ART), the uncertainty of technology safety and the disease background of infertility may pose high risk to induce embryonic source disease and bring great hidden trouble to the birth population quality in our country.

For this purpose, she was the first to undertake ART safety researches and found: the offspring birth defect rate of assisted reproduction increased 1.3 times; the multiple pregnancy rate is as high as 55%; the offspring has abnormities in the aspects of genes, proteins and epigenetic modifications. Based on these findings, national major scientific research project established a special research item that "risk assessment and mechanism research of assisted reproductive inducing embryonic source diseases". In addition, she started from clinical findings that "ART controlled ovarian hyperstimulation and ultra-high physiological concentration of estrogen in the parent body during the early pregnancy will cause birth weight decrease, small for gestational age infant and increased risk of offspring cardiovascular, thyroid dysfunction” and used the characteristics of epigenetic reprogramming during the gamete/ embryo period to establish many unique research models and innovatively forward leaded the focus in tardive disease research to the gametogenesis period.
At present, a series of research results have been completed in clinical transformation and provided an effective strategy for optimizing clinical assisted reproductive technology and reducing the risks of developing source diseases.
The International Peace Maternity & Child Health Hospital (IPMCH) of China Welfare Institute, which was founded by Mme. Soong Ching Ling personally founded in 1952, now is an AAA Grade special Ob-Gyn Hospital and an Affiliated Hospital of Medicine College Shanghai Jiaotong University as the integration of medical treatments, teaching and scientific researches. Hospital has always adhered to the mandate of “being experimental and demonstrative and strengthening scientific researches”. In recent years, IPMCH annual outpatient visit number was nearly 1.3 million; annual hospitalized patient number was about 40,000; annual surgical operation number was more than 30,000; both the maternal mortality rate and the perinatal mortality rate were maintained at the international leading level. In recent years, IPMCH got rich scientific research achievements and received multiple national awards including second prize of the “National Scientific & Technological Advancement Award”, first prize of the “Chinese Medical Science Award”, first prize of “National Maternal and Child Health Science and Technology”, first prize of “Shanghai Scientific & Technological Advancement Award”. In 2015, IPMCH became one of the first PGD and NIPT clinical application pilot units of National Health and Family Planning Commission and gave birth to Shanghai first genome-wide screening PGS healthy baby, first domestic single cell high throughput sequencing combined nuclear type positioning thyroid cancer family "cancer-free" PGD baby, first domestic PGD blocking osteogenesis imperfecta genetic baby. At present, there are over 60 national research projects. The “China-Canada Healthy Life Track Planning: Community - Family - Mather and Child Comprehensive Intervention Cohort Research for Childhood Obesity Prevention” cooperated with Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) became a major international cooperation research project of Natural Science Foundation of China.
