On the evening of November 29, a reception to celebrate the 80th anniversary of China Welfare Institute (CWI) was held in Hong Kong. The event kicked off in a heart-warming children's chorus, For the Beautiful Earth.
Wang Jiarui, vice chairman of the 12th CPPCC and chairman of CWI, Wong Kam-Sing, chief secretary for Administration in Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, He Jing, deputy director of Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Peggy Lam, charter chairperson of the Hong Kong Federation of Women, Hu Jinjun, deputy director of Publicity Department of the CPC Shanghai Committee and director general of Shanghai Municipal Administration of Film, and Zhang Xiaomin, vice chairman, secretary of Party Committee and general secretary of CWI attended the event together with more than 300 representatives from all walks of life in Hong Kong.
Wang Jiarui remarked in his speech that it was Soong Ching Ling who founded the China Defense League, the predecessor of CWI, in Hong Kong on June 14, 1938 when the Chinese nation was at the critical juncture of survival. The League was established to lead and unite friends from all over the world to provide moral and material support for the War of the Chinese People against Japanese Aggression. Over the past 80 years, generations of followers have unswervingly adhered to Soong Ching Ling’s guideline of “offering wholehearted services to women and children,” taken “experimental, demonstrative, and strengthened scientific researches” as the working principle, and built a pattern of “based in Shanghai, covering the Yangtze River delta, serving the whole country and with a global outlook”. They have established a number of well-known brands involving 7 segments and played a unique role in promoting the welfare of women and children, facilitating the reunification of China and safeguarding global peace and development.
On June 14, President Xi Jinping sent a congratulatory letter for the 80th anniversary of CWI. He fully affirmed the work of CWI and put forward higher requirements. He expressed his expectation that CWI would unite all the women and children welfare workers to remain dedicated to the cause in the future, promote the physical and mental health of women and children, and make greater contributions to the Two Centenary Goals and China Dream, that is, the rejuvenation of the Chinese Nation. Recently, studying the spirit of the congratulatory letter has been a top priority and a major political task for CWI. This root-seeking trip to Hong Kong and the one-month achievements exhibition held in Chongqing are among a series of initiatives taken at the new starting point of the 80th anniversary to review the history, keep the mission firmly in mind and forge forward.
Wang said that Hong Kong was the birthplace and starting point of CWI. From a broader perspective, Hong Kong is an important international metropolis as well as a significant bridgehead for the two-way opening up of China, serving as a bridge for Chinese and western cultural exchanges. In the past 40 years of reform and opening up, Hong Kong has been a creator of great miracles and has played an indispensible and special role. CWI would like to work with friends from all walks of life in Hong Kong in the new era of national reform and opening up, ride on the waves of the times, improve people’s livelihood including the welfare of women and children, enhance the people’s sense of gain and happiness, create an even better homeland and jointly strive for better development of Hong Kong.
At the reception, the Little Companion Art Troupe from CWI Children’s Palace presented brilliant performances. Accompanied by the melodious folk music trio Jiangnan Charm, the “Little Companions” finished a calligraphic work entitled “80 Years of Bond” implying the close bond between CWI and Hong Kong during the past 80 years. They also created a piece of paper-cut artwork called “Joyful Encounter” which expressed the joy of CWI and all walks of life in Hong Kong when they got together and discussed the future collaboration and development.
The violin solo Chardas was touching and wonderfully tuneful, yet cheerful and upbeat. The children’s choruses Beautiful Distance and Dongdongkui were like melodies from heaven and greatly entertained the guests. The reception concluded with the song of On the Wings of Song. |
