2017 Shanghai International Children’s Theatre Festival Kicks off
On July 28, 2017 Shanghai International Children’s Theatre Festival kicked off at the Aster Hall of China Welfare Institute Children’s Art Theatre (CWICAT). The Festival was established in 2004, and this year marks the 10th year of the Festival. Themed “Hearts and Dreams for Children”, the festival is hosted by Shanghai Municipal Administration of Culture, Radio, Film & TV, China Welfare Institute (CWI) and Shanghai Federation of Literary and Art Circles, and jointly organized by CWICAT, Shanghai Theatre Association and Shanghai International Children’s Cultural Development Co., Ltd.


This year marks the 70th anniversary of CWICAT. In the following one month or so, a number of children’s dramas from around the world will be staged in provinces and cities such as Shanghai, Beijing and Jiangsu, taking young audiences on the journey to enjoy the glamour of children’s drama against different cultural backdrops.
CWICAT presented the world classic Titanic as the opening performance, Titanic depicted the family, friendship and love in ordinary people’s life through animals’ perspectives. All the audiences were deeply touched, and broke into thunderous applause as the performance finished.


From July 28 to August 20, a variety of dramas suitable for children aged 3 to 18 from countries and regions such as Israel, Brazil and Argentina will be staged at the Aster Hall of CWICAT, Changning Culture and Art Center, Ciro’s Exhibition Center of Shanghai Puppet Theatre and the Culture and Art Lobby of Shanghai Culture and Art Hall. More than 40 dramas will be performed in Shanghai, and 10 will tour other provinces and cities.


The amusing Israeli monodrama Four Fables and a Queen describes four philosophical fables with exaggerated and funny body language; the new Brazilian circus Men with Soles of Wind (Homens de Solas de Vento) presents the poetic beauty for children through unique music, acrobatics and dance; and the enlightening Polish series Take a Guess that is full of interaction and imagination helps children perceive the world around them through color, sound and body.
The Argentine puppet show The Steadfast Tin Soldier delineates the protagonist’s tenacity and persistence by having the puppet and performers act on the same stage; the Japanese musical tale The Mochi-Mochi Tree and theater of “Human Shadow”tell the story of how a 5-year-old boy conquers darkness and shadow by himself; the Lebanese 1001 Roses shows the growth of little seeds throughout the year poetically with the works of impressionists; and the children’s drama A Cat that Wants to Fly adapted from Chen Bochui’s fairy tale of the same name appears as the congratulatory performance. There will also be activities such as the community tour of International Children’s Theatre Festival, parenting salons of Shanghai children’s drama and international children’s drama seminars.
