Soong Ching Ling School and University of California, Los Angeles Sign a Contract for Educational Cooperation
On the morning of May 2, Shanghai Soong Ching Ling School, a subordinate organization of China Welfare Institute, held a signing ceremony for cooperation with UCLA, whereby the two schools will establish global classes, explore the practical research of high school-to-university connection and transition, and conduct educational cooperation and project sharing. The attendees of the signing ceremony included Zhang Xiaomin, Secretary of Leading Party Members’ Group and Secretary General of China Welfare Institute, Zhao Huiqin, Secretary of CPC Shanghai Qingpu District Committee, Dr. Cindy Fan, Vice President of UCLA, among other leaders and guests.


Nowadays, the high school education in China has stepped into a new stage for deepening reform, and the “13th Five-year” Plan for the Development of National Educational Career clearly indicated to “accelerate modernization of education, promote the construction of innovative nation and strong the state by talents”, thus high school education, as a connecting link between elementary education and university education, assumes the mission of laying foundation to the cultivation of innovative talents in the early stage. Under such background, Soong Ching Ling School has always explored the new way to cultivate talents from the view of east-west integration and through building a bridge connecting and transmitting high school with and to university.


Soong Ching Ling School focuses on providing high-quality modern education to students, cultivating students' critical thinking and scientific spirit, and improving the research ability and innovation ability of students by virtue of scientific research resources of universities at home and abroad; building an unobstructed educational platform for students to master internationally advanced knowledge and idea and take part in global and international competition, and cultivating future talents who take root in Chinese culture and are equipped with international horizon and global competitiveness for the state. In September this year, Soong Ching Ling School will enroll the first 50 high school students for Domestic Division.


As an international school, Soong Ching Ling School has always provided a growth platform which takes root in China and has a global view for the development of students. The School cooperated with No.2 Secondary School Attached to East China Normal University to create high-quality basic courses for high school on one hand, and integrated with the basic credit courses of UCLA organically to set global classes meeting the characteristics of Chinese students, taking root in Chinese courses, integrating internationally advanced curriculum idea and featured with the characteristics of Soong Ching Ling School on the other hand.


Liu Wei, Director of High School Department of Soong Ching Ling School, introduced that the curriculum of High School Department of Soong Ching Ling School, on the basis of compulsive courses for high school students in Shanghai, has expanded to the school-based outward bound courses of Soong Ching Ling School and integrated part of basic credit courses of UCLA. The first university courses for research and study offered include Calculus, Physics, Chemistry, Computer, Microeconomics/Macroeconomics, Protection of Natural Environment, Introduction to Sociology and Methodology, and Academic Writing.


Soong Ching Ling School has always actively expanded the outreach activities with famous universities and colleges at home and abroad, and conducted education activities connecting high school with university. At present, the School has employed Chung K. Law, Professor of Princeton University and Academician of both National Academy of Engineering and American Academy of Arts and Sciences as the consultant for the School’s development, to put forward guiding views for the cooperation of the School with universities and colleges at home and abroad. In addition, the School will invite professors and scientists from famous universities and colleges at home and abroad such as Harvard University, Stanford University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, California Institute of Technology, Tsinghua University and Fudan University to deliver lectures, short-term courses and summer camp courses, so as to create opportunities to know more about university and major for students, and help students to find their major directions and make life plans as early as possible; furthermore, the School also encourages students who have learning capacity and are interested in scientific research to build scientific research coaching relation with research groups and scientific research teams of universities, so as to lead students to conduct science and innovation activities and subject research, and cultivate the academic research and innovation ability of students.


UCLA, founded in 1919, is a representative of public research-based university in the system of University of California, and ranked the first in the 2018 Top Public Colleges & Universities of U.S.NEWS. Soong Ching Ling School’s cooperation with UCLA for global classes aims at introducing the scientific research resources of UCLA, the teaching mode and learning methods of university education in the stage of high school; exploring the curriculum structure integrating the high school courses in China in the university courses for research and study, and advancing the organic connection of elementary education and higher education, meanwhile, by virtue of the scientific and research resources of university, further cultivating students’ academic preciseness and critical thinking, and improving the scientific research ability and innovative attainment of students.


As a K-12 school covering primary school, junior high school and senior high school, Soong Ching Ling School always insists on laying solid foundation to the continuous development of each kid through high-quality education. The cooperation with UCLA marks a new stage of Soong Ching Ling School in terms of innovation and practice relevant to high school-to-university connection and transition.
