Founded by Mme Soong Ching ling on April 10th, 1947, the CWI Children’s Art Theatre (the Children’s Art Theatre or the Theatre) has long produced nearly 300 outstanding plays including the famous Malan Flower and has been awarded multiple prizes at the state level. In the recent years, the Children’s Art Theatre has put on stage a series of new plays, such as Nightingale, Ugly Princess, Emperor’s New Clothes, Rabbit and Gun, and Challenge 3VS3. Due to pay special attention to the aesthetic interest of the youngsters and children today, these dramas were well received by them.

With 2 to 3 new dramas and 7 to 8 plays on show each year, the  Theatre has performed for over 330 times in Shanghai, Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Anhui, Guangdong and other provinces, and the audiences exceeded 200,000. In the past few years, the Theatre has successfully thrown Shanghai International Children Theatre Festival and introduced quality plays from all round the globe to add glosses to the summer vacation life of youngsters and children and build up a platform for the international exchange of children. The Theatre has actively prepared for and established a dedicated rehearsal hall for children’s plays since 2004 – Malan Flower Rehearsal Hall. It consists of two parts, the 460-seated Malan Flower Rehearsal Hall and the 160-seated parent-child space. The Rehearsal Hall puts on weekly show at each two-day weekend while the green grassland alongside may be used to hold various parent-child activities. “If you want to watch the children’s plays, go to the Malan Flower”. It will not only become a motto, but also forge a new recreational and cultural life style for children in Shanghai.
