How Splendid The Sunshine Is!

When the curtain was slowly pulled open and the whole stage was filled with golden sunshine, a group of intelligence-challenged children, led by Mrs. Zhang of the Sunshine Home, were singing, dancing and doing the handwork.

One day, an intelligence-challenged student named Zhijun joined the Sunshine Home. Mrs. Zhang asked him to give a self-introduction and asked about his hobbies,  he replied woman was his favorite. With the development of the story line, it turned out that when Zhijun was a little child, his mother passed away. Having only a photo with his mother, Zhijun’s vague impression of and yearning for his mother became a special preference for all women. It was also the Zhijun, when he noticed that Mrs. Zhang, the teacher he likes, was at odds with her boyfriend, he went to the young man and asked: “Mrs. Zhang is so good a person, you don’t love her?” “Of course, I love her.” “Then why did you make her cry?” “I don’t want her to be your teacher, and I have contacted a head-hunting company for her to work there.” After knowing that the head-hunting company is a company that hunts a person from a company to let him or her work for another company, Zhijun sharply asked, “Isn’t it doing immoral things?” The young man said, “It is called going after the higher places.” Zhijun refuted, “It is called forgetting your integrity for your personal gain and changing your mind the moment you see something different.” The young man said with disdain, “You are too foolish to understand it.” Zhijun returned seriously, “You’re foolish and I’m not. Mrs. Zhang is a good person, and the good person should be rewarded. She makes us happy every day, and she shouldn’t have pain.” It seemed that the young man was moved, “How could I being persuaded by such a fool unconsciously? Maybe I am a fool. I almost give up such a good girl…” This is the latest stage play “Splendid Sunshine” staged at the Children’s Art Theatre of China Welfare Institute (Shanghai), and it was greatly supported by Shanghai Disabled Persons’ Federation and the “Sunshine Home” of Quyang Road Sub-district in Hongkou District.

With constant laughter and tears, I watched the play and was deeply moved. It even urged me to pay a visit to the “Sunshine Home”.

“Sunshine Home”, a practical project of the Shanghai Municipal Government in 2005, provides free special education, training of living and communicating abilities, and rehabilitation training for the intelligence-challenged persons. Through learning, a great part of them are already able to do some simple job. There are currently 65,000 such persons in Shanghai, which are heavy pains and burdens to the society and their families in particular. There are 240 “Sunshine Homes” and 51 “Sunshine Workshops” now in Shanghai. The municipal government will establish 50 “Sunshine Workshops” this year. Over 10,000 intelligence-challenged persons have joined the “Sunshine Home” and enjoyed the love in this big and warm family. “Sunshine Home” is the intelligence-challenged persons’ paradise. A great many parents of the intelligence-challenged children, who have been benefited from “Sunshine Home”, wrote letter to the municipal government to thank the Party and the government for such a practical and good deed for the people, and thank the “Sunshine Home” for helping the intelligence-challenged persons’ families, which had efficiently reduced the pressure and burdens of their families in practical.

Walking into the “Sunshine Home” of the Xiaodongmen Street in Huangpu District, you are surrounded by liveliness and happiness at once. The intelligence-challenged children like laughing very much, and they laugh loudly and freely. These children hold your hands passionately and let you get involved with them. There is a severe intelligence-challenged child who even cannot speak. But every time she sees you, she will hug you closely to express her affection for you. They play ping-pong and games happily. The arts and crafts made by the children were being auctioned and sold for charity many times, and all the money was donated to the Sichuan earthquake-stricken areas and charities. Being asked the reason to do these things, they gave the answer “It is doing good deeds.” Those intelligence-challenged children, the “fool” in the eyes of others, are endowed with artistic talent. Their performance “Dongmen Welcomes the World Expo and Everybody learns English” will surprise you. The children performed not only singing and dancing, but also rap, opusculum, martial arts, and harmonica and keyboard solo. Every time the children put their palms together and showed a large shape of heart, their sincere and impressive sounds touched the softest place in the depth of your heart, and your eyes would be filled with tears.

Today is the National Day of Assisting Disabled Persons. The theme in this year is to “Care about The Disabled Children and Emphasize The Special Education”. Mr. Mao Qinghe, a teacher from the “Sunshine Home” of Xiaodongmen Street in Huangpu District, is the first worker coming to the “Sunshine Home” to do the special education, who is a disabled person too. He said, “Generally the teachers are in pursuit of having students all over the world. While we, workers for the special education, is just seeking for a cycas revoluta coming into bloom. Cycas revoluta is a kind of plant hard to come into bloom. These children are like the cycas revoluta, and more confidence and patience are needed. However, each time we see the little progress of the children, we feel very happy as the progress proves that our work is very meaningful.”
